Group Summary

Globalization, according to the Encyclopedia Britannica, is a phenomenon involving the interconnection of information and communications technologies, computer networks, and media content. As a group we looking at globalization from different perspectives with each of us having a different type of media to evaluate. The media mediums include advertising, social media, television, sports, and music. As we researched these topics, the group found that globalization plays a large role in the media we see daily. Through the assignment, our group saw obvious effects of globalization through interconnectivity of different parts of the world using all media platforms.

In sports, Alex saw that we are able to stream any sport we like no matter if it is an American sport or team playing while advertising with Katy proved that serious global businesses such as Coca Cola have shifted their ads depending on their audience. Every media we analyzed showed signs of globalization taking hold in our day to day media use.

Each can be downloaded or streamed on handheld devices making them easily accessible to users.  We have access to resources from around the world and can store this information on a smartphone in our pockets.   Convergence is a theme which presented itself in our group findings. Convergence is described by Vivian as “the merging of virtually all forms of mass communication… via various digital media platforms.” We have found that convergence assists in the globalization of advertising, sports, television, music, and social media.

Advertising is a form of media that is present throughout our findings.  Katy introduces us to the topic of advertising in her blog. It is strategic, and it is everywhere.  It is a form of a push-model. The advertising information is pushed onto consumers. Advertisements are pushed in sports. Teams become part of a branding strategy.  Games are sponsored by companies. Sporting events like the “Chick-fil-A” bowl act as one giant advertisement.

Alex mentions in his blog, advertising for the Super Bowl is some of the most expensive in the world because it is one of the most watched sporting events. When it comes to TV, Olivia explains that consumers are willing to pay to avoid adds.  Many are sick and tired of having a surplus of media pushed on them. In Ellen’s findings, she discovers that music entertainers can better advertise themselves via social media. They create their own push media and can become viral through the internet. This brings us to Lauren’s topic of social media. She explains how shopping is trending on apps such as Instagram. This is made possible through advertisements. Because cookies are installed and like buttons share information, many companies direct their advertisements to consumers who are likely to purchase their goods. Advertising is very influential in global media. We explain how sports, TV, music and social media are global within our blogs. The advertisements attached to these platforms are influential and can be seen all over the world.

The Truth of Modern Media Globalization

By Lauren Soltis

In modern day media, we are able to portray ourselves in any light we want. Want to seem rich? Easy. Want to be a world traveler? Done. These things do not have to portray our reality because social media makes it possible to live a life that is completely fake. When it comes to a global image, social media does the best at portraying a false image. What different countries see of each other can often be a facade of how people are living. For example, when people think of Americans they think we all eat hamburgers every day and look either fat or like Kim Kardashian.

Media can be very hard to navigate from an outside perspective. The image repair theory is a theory that states how to determine a threat to their image and what to do to neutralize it in the media. When there is a crisis, this theory is often used by world leaders to make sure they save their image with the eyes of the globe focused on them. Public relations (PR) agencies are most often the source of this social media clear up. PR is defined by Vivian as firms that create campaigns that focus on public interest and news coverage, rather than paid advertisements and marketing. The goal of public relations being to create a good public image for a company. Often times, PR will craft media releases and develop social media programs to shape public perception of their organization. Social media that covers global news does the damage control for various countries across the world that are going through a crisis whether it is from natural disaster, terrorism or economics.

The media covers the tracks of the wrong doing in countries across the world and this type of globalism through social media portrays a false idea of the world we are living in. While Americans face stigmas against their appearance, those in the Middle East face much greater with the medias portrayal of terrorism being someone located in Pakistan. These ideals in globalization are dangerous for the entirety of our world and must be controlled. The media is not acting as a watch dog in this sense.

Business is Booming: Using Instagram to Online Shop

By Lauren Soltis

If you have a scrolling addiction like me than you have surely found yourself on Instagram’s explore page. Whenever I end up there, I always seem to get lost in the multitude of posts, and I usually find myself scrolling past heaps of Instagram ‘business’ accounts. Specifically, clothing brands who use their media platforms to gain their traction as brands. These companies have had huge success in recent years some of which have even become household names for young girls. Some businesses have been started specifically for Instagram, being that the site is so successful right now. Putting clothing companies online increases the audience to a global level with worldwide shipping and marketing across multiple platforms.

Companies such as Fashion Nova and Laura’s Boutique are social media famous due to their substantial promotion on Instagram. Not only do these many Instagram companies ship their products worldwide, but a tactic brands use to increase global sales consists of getting influencers of media to post about their clothing or tag themselves wearing the styles. These internet sensations promote the products and reach more people through their following. This has to do with having the right audience, a theory produced from a study published by Elsevier. With 75 percent of teenagers in America currently have profiles on social networking sites, having popular social figures do the advertising for you is marketing genius for these Instagram shops. The use of advertisement through popular social media users increase the globalization of shopping through Instagram.

The newest easy feature of tapping on a picture to shop directly from the post you are viewing has taken Instagram by storm. Social media is essentially a shopping website now through this feature and it has created a very simple solution to the endless searching for the right product online. The effortlessness of shopping on Instagram has come from the use of convergence. Vivian defines convergence as “The merging of virtually all forms of mass communication—print, television, radio, the Internet, as well as interactive technologies—via various digital media platforms is referred to as media convergence.” Through this Instagram feature, globalization has taken an even bigger step forward as Instagram has converged online shopping with social media.

You’re Speaking My Language

By Lauren Soltis

Translation at the push of a button. In today’s world, social media is a very accommodating tool when it comes to communication. People across the globe are able to communicate with one another, no matter the language barrier, through social networks.

Connectivity and globalization have been popular topics over the past two decades. With the influx in social media usage across the world, the issue of a language barrier online was hard to ignore. Platforms such as Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, ect., needed to break that barrier in order to keep up with their ever-growing online global communicates.

According to Unbabel Blog, “it is estimated in 2015 that 55.5% of all web content is in English, however, around 20% of the world’s population speaks English.”

The problem with that need, however, is that translators do not always prove accurate. A research study centered around the problems with machine translated text being inaccurate affirms that added functions (such as correction of punctuation) would be useful in creating exact translations. The study connects the complications with machine translation to the fact that social media users type with an especially informal tone that is difficult to convert to another language. Having a translator that can maneuver through the informal tone would allow people to better communicate on social media.

Many applications have been produced for the sole purpose of translating social media platforms, Stepes is one of them. This application translates any file you request with up to 100 different languages to choose from. This program applies to social medias as well and it claims to take only a few hours to produce a ready social media post. Technologies such as this is what has made globalization such an easy process and made international communication simple.

In 2016, Instagram announced that their app would be embedding a feature that instantly translates captions, comments, and ‘bios’ from the language of origin to your language of choice. Although this feature is now taken for granted, at one point this was not an option on social media. Other media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook use translation features as well that increase connectivity online.

Changes such as these in the social media world have been important contributors to the globalization of social media in our technologically advanced society. Online translators are only a small contribution to the increasing globalization that we are experiences in this world.
